Alt Summit Food Tour of Salt Lake City

Reviewed by Josh

At Alt Summit this year, I was honored with the task of giving a Salt Lake City food tour.  A group of us from the conference trudged around in the bad weather all for the cause of eating delicious local foods.  Okay, I’ll be honest, although the picture above does depict us walking the cold winter streets, we mostly relied on our rented van to get us around.

Our first stop:  The Rose Establishment.  I thought the group of young entreprenuers would not only enjoy the food and drink at The Rose but also be inspired by Erica, the young and vibrant owner of the cafe. While most people know of The Rose as a coffee and tea shop, locals know this cosy spot also serves up delicious breakfast and lunch.  While Erica enlightened on the local food scene and her journey in owning a cafe, we enjoyed one of my favorites, vegetarian chili and avocado toast.

While we were at The Rose we had a surprise guest, Debora Hammond of Cheese Bread Mania, stop in for a visit and a few tastes of her traditional Brazilian Cheese Bread.  It was a delight to hear her story of sharing her culture’s traditional foods with Salt Lake.

From The Rose we took a short jaunt around the block to Tony Caputo’s Market and Deli.  While we could have easily spent the whole tour here, Matt was kind to give us a brief taste of all the local products they proudly carry at Caputo’s.  In less than an hour’s time we tasted everything from local chocolate, to salami, cheese, and honey wine vinegar. Attendees were all suprised at the breadth of quality local products we enjoy in Salt Lake. Alt_Summit_SLC_Foodie_Tour

From Caputo’s we moved on to a little pallet cleanser, sampling Charming Beard Coffee at the new Nobrow Coffee Werks location. Nobrow opened its closed doors for the group as they have just moved into their new location and hadn’t even served the public yet.  Not only did we get this sneak preview of Salt Lake’s newest coffee shop, we also got to witness first hand all of our drinks being made pour-over style by owners Joe and Duffy.  We walked away a little warmer and enlightened by all of the new trends in coffee.  One even made a remark that this was her first time to enjoy a straight-up black cup of coffee!

After a brief break from food, we were ready for something sweet.  I lead the group on to Les Madeleines, where we would meet the owner, Romina, and taste her award winning pastry, the Kouing Aman.  She also spoiled us with macaroons, tiramisu shots, and fresh-from-the-oven madeleines.

Our eclectic group of travel bloggers, magazine editors, DIY enthusiasts, app developers, event organizers and packaging designers all left with full tummies and a gift bag loading each of them up with all of the best products from around Salt Lake.  Special thanks to Slide Ridge Honey, Real Salt, Crio Bru, Shirley J, Mini’s Cupcakes and Edible Wasatch for helping fill their suitcases with tasty local products.

  1. Thanks again Becky! I had the honey wine vinegar in a simple vinaigrette on a salad tonight and I worried that I will one day run out, even though I went back to Caputo’s and bought a huge bottle of it. It’s just so delicious!
