I’ve been boiling over with excitement in anticipation of sharing with you about a new favorite Park City restaurant, Reef’s.  There are several locals type spots in Park City that have won over my heart recently, Reef’s being one of them.  In a few past posts I have given you ideas for a more local guide to Salt Lake, telling you about my favorite casual lunch spot, Fairweather Foods, a great summer hang out, Windy Ridge Cafe, an underground Asian fare discovery Shabu, plus the best pizza in Park City, Maxwell’s. Today I’m sharing with you my best new find, sensational Mediterranean food on a side street in Park City.

If you’re new to the area or don’t frequent Park City often, I will let you in on a few tips.  Many Park City restaurants close down during the ‘shoulder season’ and reopen during the summer.  Also, during the summer months many of the best Park City restaurants offer discounts to locals in the Park City Record newspaper.  Reef’s is now back open with their spring and summer hours and ready to serve you up some delicious food and a good story.

Reef’s is run by an Israeli family, of which the son is the talented chef and co-owner, the dad is a co-owner and the personality, and the lovely daughter-in-law is the manager. The grandson, currently 6 years old, is the namesake and chief taster, Reef, creating three generations of men represented at the restaurant. Family run restaurants are usually operated with much pride and ownership, this being quintessential a example. This is the type of place with secret sauces and seasonal plates are not included on the menu and where you trust recommendations of the staff on what is fresh and what to order.

After getting the recommendations from the family staff, we decided to order a few items and have a family style meal. It all began with olives, pita and their secret Yeminite sauce (the spicy green sauce picutred above). Then we chose wine from their imported wine list, which includes some great ines from Morocco and Israel. For an appetizer we had a traditional sampler of hummus, babaghanouj, cauliflower baba, tahini and falafel.  The hummus being the most creamy hummus I have ever tasted and my best experience with babaghanouj thus far.  My mouth is salivating just remembering this meal!

Next we tried the Indonesian salad, which came highly recommended from my friend and had a light sesame house dressing.

For entrees we ordered the mussels served over a flavorful and slightly sweet sake-coconut-curry sauce, and a special of the evening scallops, served fresh with a cream sauce. For the perfect finale of this meal we sipped cardamom tea, poured from an ornate gold pot with gold rimmed glass tea cups and their signature Halva tahini cookie, which literally melted in your mouth.

Being a Mediterranean food fanatic after spending some time in Greece, I’m always on the search for the good Mediterranean food around, and Reef’s proved itself to me in food and personality.  They are now open for the summer with seasonal dishes, and a pre fix menu that includes a salad, entree and Halva cookie.
