After getting gipped on a white Christmas this year we decided to find our own Winter Wonderland and take a little day trip to Midway, a little Swiss community about one hour from Salt Lake City. We made a fun day of it and decided to drive first to Provo for breakfast at Communal (one of my favorites). Completely satisfied and overjoyed by my baked eggs with Italian Sausage and a crumbly blueberry muffin, we got back in the car and headed to the charming town of Midway.
The road from Provo to Midway takes you on a winter voyage past snow laden evergreens, icey rivers, serene lakes, and near-old railroads. A few turns and you arrive in one of the most quaint small towns in Utah. Midway still has an old-world feel, with Swiss architecture and several small shops and cafes.
My mother-in-law loves Christmas decor, so we took her to several of the home decor shops decked out during Christmas time with whimsy. All of the shops we visited are on the main street running through town. Some are in old refurbished homes. There are a few antique shops, clothing stores, a book store, and plenty of beautiful old buildings and barns to photograph.
If you want to dine in Midway, there are a few fun options. One of the better mexican food restaurants in the state resides here, Tarahumara. You can also warm up with some brick-oven pizza at Cafe Galleria.
After exploring Midway for a bit, we headed home by way of Heber and Hwy 40 to make a complete triangle with our quick road trip. On this part of the drive you’ll pass the Jorandelle Reservoir, the back side of Deer Valley, the exit for Park City and by that time you’re not far from home.
