I wanted to share with you some photos of our Olfactory Wine Tasting with Jim Santangelo. Also, if you’d like to make the recipe for Ginger Lemonade that we enjoyed that Sunday afternoon, you can get the full recipe on theVintageMixer.com.
All of our SLCmixers are centered around local food, drink, or local people. In this case, we were highlighting Jimmy Santangelo.
For those of you who don’t know Jim, he is a wine expert of our city. He advises many of the top local restaurants on their wine lists, including Copper Onion and Pago, and also mentors budding wine enthusiasts in the area. He runs The Virtual Sommelier and Wine Academy of Utah, where he teaches the local community about the intricacies of tasting and smelling wine. He also highlights a new wine in his newsletter ever week that you can buy locally. Its like a little gift every week when I get my email advising me of what wine to try this week. You can sign up to receive his newsletter here.
On this special Sunday afternoon Jim taught us how to taste and see wine using our olfactory senses. We smelled and tasted foods which brought our the smells, tastes, and sights of the wine we were tasting. From light bodied whites, which brought up flavors of grapefruit to full bodied reds bringing up familiar notes of licorice. It was a fun experiment of the senses and super helpful in the process of learning how to taste wine.
We also must thank Nicholas & Co for suppling the wine glasses for this event. They were beautiful Riedel crystal glasses, perfect for a Sunday afternoon wine tasting in the city.
We had a fantastic time learning with Jim. Here are some photos of our Sunday afternoon:
