Rico Market in Salt Lake City

Okay friends, as a huge Mexican Food fanatic, I have found a place I can 100% recommend for you in Salt Lake.  Rico Market is located on 700 South and 500 East and serves fresh, inexpensive Mexican food all day.  Though I am a fan of Rico’s other restaurant, Frida Bistro, for the right occasion, I must tell you that the market is much more fitting for routine visits. The atmosphere is really laid back, the staff is very friendly and helpful, and they serve quick, tasty, authentic Mexican food- just as it should be! Forget all of the average “Mexican Food” chains around town like Bajio, Chipotle, and Cafe Rio.  I promise Rico’s is far superior.
On the weekends the chef from Frida Bistro will come to the Market to serve up his dishes there, offering more variety than what they have during week days.  He is super friendly and would love to explain to you what each dish is made from and the origins of his ideas. And if you even glance at one of the items he’ll be so generous as to offer you a sample (I had several).  His mantra was this: “All my food is authentic, no fusion here, that’s just who I am.”  I loved hearing that.  When a chef or food artisan is creating something that stems from who they are as a person, you know its going to be good.  And his face just lights up as he tells you about his creations.
During the week, you would see the usual carne asada, chicken chipotle and chile verde for tacos as well as taco salads, rice bowls, enchiladas and tamales, while on the weekends you’ll see more unusual dishes like Pescado a la Veracruzana (Fish with Tomatoes, white Onions and Green Olives) or Pollo con Crema de Salsa Poblana (Chicken w/ Poblano Cream Sauce & Pasilla Peppe)- both pictured above. One of our favorite dishes, Conchinita Pibil, (Pork Marinated in Orange Juice and Achiote) is served throughout the weekdays and makes for a super tasty taco.  Their tacos are $2 each for $5 for a plate with two sides.
Of course, I can’t leave without a taste of something sweet. If you just need a little sweet grab a couple of their Mexican wedding cookies.  Or you can splurge and have a Frida Cookie, a Mexican chocolate cookie with a melted mole center.  I’ve even tried my hand at making a homemade version of The Frida Cookie.
The market also sells all of the Rico Brand products that we’ve all come to love around Salt Lake, like burritos, chips, rice, beans, tortillas, salsa, guacamole and more (great for parties like this one). We’ve also found that the frozen burritos sold here taste much fresher than the ones at the supermarket. The Rico Market also sells goods from other local providers like honey, granola, and Brazilian Pao de queijo by Cheese Bread Mania’s (if you haven’t tried these yet, you must).
