10 years ago, my wife and I took a trip to Berlin, Germany. We made a pact that we would only eat authentic German food the entire time we were there… by the end of the trip, we found ourselves in pizza parlors. We could only handle so much pork, potatoes and sauerkraut. So every time Oktoberfest roles around, we don’t get all that excited… we love German style beers and the occasional bratwurst, but we definitely feel like we’ve “been there, done that…” That is until the Grand America Hotel decided to do their own version of Oktoberfest.
That’s right gang, The Grand America Hotel is putting their twist on one of the most famous food & beer celebrations in the world. In an effort to make The Grand America Hotel more accessible as a Salt Lake dining destination, they are rolling out a month-long celebration held every Friday and Saturday evening in the Garden Café where each week a different special beer pairing from Epic Brewery and a three course German inspired meal is prepared by Chef Thomas Call. My wife and I both had the distinct pleasure of giving this festival another chance and I am thrilled to report that our Oktoberfest angst has been eradicated.
These pairings are a result of collaboration between all the chefs at The Grand America Hotel and the brew-masters at Epic. We got to sample week 1 that included Eingelegter Thunfisch – Ahi Tuna with pickled summer vegetables chosen from our local farmers market paired with Epic’s Wit Beer. Brathahnchen mit Kartoffelsalat – Grilled half chicken with spiced and German potato salad paired with a Imperial Red Ale. For dessert, Apfelstrudel – Apple strudel, calvados reduction and vanilla ice cream paired with a Sour Apple Saison. Needless to say, we cannot wait to go back to try the other weekly creations.
