The Soup Kitchen in Sugarhouse

Reviewed by Becky

This week I took a friend to a favorite spot of mine on 1100 East in Sugarhouse, the Soup Kitchen. If you haven’t been there you most definitely should. It is a breath of fresh air amongst the renovations of Sugarhouse. 1100 East North of 2100 South is, in general, still intact, whereas the rest of Sugarhouse is in the process of being commercialized. At the Soup Kitchen you will find a wide selection of fresh homemade soups and sandwiches. A large chalkboard displays the day’s menu and baskets of bread sticks await you in the ordering line. Reminiscent of an elementary school cafeteria, you must pick up a tray and go through a short line to order you meal. Humble interiors with quirky wall decorations surround you as you sit at a small booth or table. This week we tried the broccoli cheese soup, which was delightful, and in the past we’ve also enjoyed the split pea soup here. Make sure and visit the Green Ant across the street before or after your meal, where you will be sure to find something fun to bring home. The Green Ant is a “modern vintage” store with mostly furniture and house items. This week I found a pair of green lamps that I immediately fell in love with as I walked in the door. There are a few more fun shops to visit around the area as well as a tattoo place next door if you’re feeling really crazy. This is the indie Sugarhouse that we all remember.

  1. I haven’t been to The Soup Kitchen in about four years, but I was a regular during the year I lived in Sugarhouse. It’s good to know the commercialization isn’t dumping my old favorite hole-in-the-wall! :)
